Press Release – World Blood Donor Day, 2020

Press Release – World Blood Donor Day, 2020

As Ghana joins the rest of the World to celebrate World Blood Donor Day, the Board of Trustees of the Ghana Blood Foundation wishes to congratulate all voluntary blood donors for their selfless commitment to donate blood on a regular basis.

World Blood Donor Day is dedicated to all voluntary blood donors, who have ensured that even the COVID-19 crisis, has not interrupted their zeal to donate blood but have ensured that safe blood remains available, contributing to the transfusion of safe blood and blood products.

As we celebrate World Blood Donor Day, let us remind ourselves that as a country, blood safety is a shared responsibility, and everyone has a role to play including governments, corporate agencies and civil society groups. This is reflected in the theme for this year” Safe Blood Saves Lives with the slogan – “give blood and make the world a healthier place to live”.

It is a known fact that “International organizations, including the World Health Organization, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations and the International Society of Blood Transfusion, among others, continue to work in close collaboration to provide guidance and support to their membership in this endeavor. Ghana can do same especially at the time we have realized the need to improve the health of our people.

We members of the Ghana Blood Foundation would like to urge the Private Sector,  Civil Society Organisations, Government and the Ministry of Health in particular, to commit to the campaign to make access to safe blood a reality for everyone. Ghana must be committed to improving her voluntary blood collection from the current 34% to at least 50% by the end of this. That is the only way we can be assured of blood sufficiency. Our involvement and support will help to ensure greater impact for World Blood Donor Day 2020 and beyond.
